Late Autumn 1986

I am seventeen years old. The air is warm and the sun is high. Dotted around the Shropshire fields are my fellow Foundation art students. En plein air painting and mark-making are the order of the day.

Back in the studio, over the following week I would enlarge that final sketch into a large scale painting. The painting becomes the main piece in my portfolio that will get me onto a BA Fine Art course in a few months time. The tutors refer to it as the “Psychedelic Hedgehog”, undermining my youthful artistic pretensions.
